traite-de-la-sagesse
Treatise on Wisdom

Full red morocco binding decorated with a scattering of gilt FDC initials. Ribbed spine. All edges gilt. Very fine unsigned contemporary binding. However, its extreme quality suggests it could be attributed to LE GASCON (15..-1653), who was universally admired during his lifetime for the quality of his binding and gilding work. The FDC initials are those of Paul Fréart de Chantelou, a military engineer and patron of artists of his time, particularly Nicolas Poussin. The book is presented in a very remarkable book-style slipcase made by the English binding workshop Rivière and Son, founded by Robert Rivière in association with his grandson Percival Calkin in 1881. This workshop developed magnificent bindings with original approaches, favoring high-quality leathers. The book-style slipcase is a perfect example of the quality of the leather used and the care taken in fitting the two parts together, which required the creation of air vents to ensure proper closure. The workshop closed in 1939.
