The oldest document in the collection on this subject, Les coustumes generales du pays et vicomté de Sole, printed in Pau by Dugues and Desbaratz in 1760, documents Souletin customary law established as early as 1520 after the territory's annexation to the domain of France in 1512, guaranteeing personal freedom and the use of common lands. A foundational text for understanding the ancient autonomy of Soule within the Basque Country. More recently, Eugène Goyheneche authored "Notre terre basque" in 1961 published by Ikas, an enriched copy with an autograph dedication to Jean Mirande. The collection also documents specific episodes, such as the marriage of Louis XIV negotiated on the Isle of Pheasants on the Bidassoa, or the parishes of the Basque Country during the Revolution according to P. Haristoy. This collection is the natural hub of the universe: it refers to Pays Basque et Sud-Ouest, to village monographs and to the Basque language and traditions for the cultural dimension. Each signed autograph dedication is verified for handwriting and date before cataloging.
Yes, including a 1760 text on the general customs of the viscounty of Soule, established as early as 1520, shortly after its attachment to France (1512), which guarantee personal freedom and the free use of common lands.
Yes, notably through P. Haristoy's study on the parishes of the Basque Country during the revolutionary period, reprinted in 1981 by Harriet.
The edition, the print run, and the presence of an autograph dedication weigh as much as the subject. These are the criteria we systematically check before cataloging.
