Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio was born on April 13, 1940, in Nice, to a father of Mauritian origin, a British military surgeon, and a mother from Nice. The family has strong ties to Mauritius, of which the writer retains citizenship and considers his ancestral homeland. In 1948, as a child, he crossed Africa to join his doctor father in Nigeria, a journey that left a profound impression on him. He studied literature in Nice and then abroad.
In 1963, at the age of twenty-three, he published Le Procès-verbal (The Interrogation), which received the Prix Renaudot and immediately brought him recognition. This first novel, with its fragmented form and rebellious character, connected him to the formal explorations of the era. The books that followed, Le Déluge (The Flood) in 1966, Terra Amata, and Les Géants (The Giants) in 1973, continued an unsettling style, critical of urban and commercial society, and infused with the angst of the modern world.
A turning point occurred in the late 1970s. His writing became calmer, embracing travel and memory. Désert (Desert), in 1980, marked this transition and received a prize from the Académie française. Le Chercheur d'or (The Prospector) in 1985, followed by Onitsha, Étoile errante (Wandering Star), and Révolutions, blended autobiography, family history, and evocations of non-Western cultures. Le Clézio then divided his life between several continents, residing in Mexico, studying Amerindian civilizations, and translating Mayan texts.
In 2008, the Swedish Academy awarded him the Nobel Prize in Literature. Since then, he has continued to publish novels, narratives, and essays, remaining faithful to his themes: nature, endangered peoples, and the beauty of the sensible world. His prose seeks sensation and movement more than analysis.
