KOEGUI's travel and geography collection is organized by continent and by publisher's collections, with a genre-specific control point: maps and fold-out plates, the first victims of time, are counted one by one before being put up for sale.
Certain pieces illustrate well what this category encompasses.Paris des rêvesby Izis (Éditions Clairefontaine, Lausanne, 1950) is the original edition of the photographer's first work, first printing, 75 photographs accompanied by facsimiles of texts by Cocteau, Henry Miller, Cendrars, and Éluard. Récits et Impressions d’Alpinismeby Guido Rey (C. Faure, Mâcon, 1913) exists in a limited edition, one of 320 numbered copies on Van Gelder laid paper, the only large paper of the work. In the "Ceinture du monde" collection, Berlinby Jean Giraudoux (Émile-Paul Frères, 1932) is among the 1,500 numbered copies on Lafuma vellum. And in the "des villes" collection, Veniseby Frédérick Tristan (Éditions du Champ Vallon, 1984) is an original edition limited to 65 copies on Ingres MBM Arches paper.
In addition to these collector's editions, there are more modest but equally dated pieces: official tourist guides, brochures, and regional booklets from the early and mid-20th century. To determine a piece's first printing or verify its print run justification, we apply the same collation as for the rest of the collection.
The collection is divided into major geographical areas: Europe travel books, Americas travel books, Asia travel books, Africa and Arab world travel books, and travel narratives. Atlases and old maps complete this set, in smaller numbers. As a member of SLAM and LILA, we provide free appraisals for any item in this category.
A travel narrative conveys the voice of an author recounting a journey; a tourist guide, often collective and unsigned, documents an era through its addresses and itineraries. Both have their place in the collection, but we describe them differently: the former by its printing and edition, the latter by its date and condition.
You need to check the print run justification and the printer's statement, as with any first edition. For example, on Frédérick Tristan's Venise, the mention "one of 65 numbered copies" is explicitly stated in the work. We systematically collate before cataloging.
That depends on the photographer or illustrator and the printing. A copy like Izis's Paris des rêvesis valuable for its status as the first printing of the author's first work, not just for its 75 photographs. Each case is assessed individually.
