Edition
The term "Edition" refers to the total number of copies printed for a work. The number of copies for old editions was quite limited: 300 for incunabula, and 1000 to 1500 for books from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries.
Nowadays, the first edition is generally printed in 1000 copies; subsequent printings are indicated as 2nd, 3rd, 4th thousand, etc. The original edition is the one that appears first; for incunabula and classics, the first editions are called princeps editions.
The definitive edition is one that is produced either after the author's death, or during their lifetime, but includes all of their works, in a definitively established form.
