Ink

The composition of the ink used in antiquity is not very well known to us, but it is believed to have been carbon-based. Metallic inks, gold and silver, were used. In the Middle Ages, colored inks were frequently employed.

The very pale black ink originally used is believed to have been improved by the van Eyck brothers.
