Illumination

An illumination is a drawing colored by an illuminator. For miniatures, great care was taken with the illumination, and the artists who created them were highly skilled. For popular imagery and playing cards, stencils or patterns were used. There are two types of illuminations:

• miniature paintings or drawings
• ornate letters.

Engraving and printing virtually caused the disappearance of illumination.
