Print

The term "Print" encompasses all impressions of a drawing or engraving executed on copper, by etching, on wood, or by other mechanical processes. However, this term is more specifically applied to impressions from copper plates. When a print is small, it is called a vignette. An original print is an impression made by the artist himself or under his direction. It is distinct from:

  • An interpretive print, which is made by an engraver based on documentation.
  • A reproduction print, which is executed from an existing work.
  • A copy, which is engraved by another engraver copying an original engraving.
