In bookbinding, a raised band refers to the protrusion on the spine of books caused by the cords that serve as support points for the sewing.
Books with perfect binding, where the cords do not protrude, do not have raised bands. However, binders apply small strips of cardboard to their spines before gluing the leather, to mimic the appearance of raised bands.
