Parchment is sheepskin prepared in a specific way to receive writing. After the hair was removed, the skin was treated with lime, then carefully scraped. It is said that this discovery took place in Pergamon.
During a part of the Middle Ages (7th-11th centuries), the scarcity of parchment forced scribes to scrape off old writings.
