The copyright is dated 1928 instead of 1929, and the cover is cream-colored with brown fillet decoration, while the 1929 edition is green.

There is no limitation notice for this edition; however, according to the catalog of the Brun sale on June 22, 1942, no. 193, it was limited to 15 COPIES ON VELIN ALFA, to be submitted to the Goncourt Prize jury.

This copy is one of the fifteen that Louis Brun, Director of Éditions Bernard Grasset, had bound in first state, off-commerce, one year before the original edition.

In this novel, a hamlet must atone for the crimes that men have committed against the Earth. Jean Giono, with this first novel, invented a new form of writing by using the language of country folk. This writing style will be found in the two books that will complete thetrilogy of Pan:Un de Baumugnesand Regain.

This genre is tinged with what is called magical realism: realistic facts intertwined with the irrational interpretation of the characters, the supernatural.
