Can anything worse happen to Don Juan than to see his own daughter in love with him, and for him to fall in love with her as well? Yet, this is the strange path to his eternal salvation. Rather than commit incest, Don Juan becomes the murderer of the too-beautiful Maria-Lisa, who resembled him so much—and this crime instantly frees him from the demon of love, finally opening him to that divine love he was unknowingly, gropingly seeking. The myth is well-worn, alas! and Don Juan probably had little new to tell us: so we prefer here the narrator himself, his restrained voice, his singular sensitivity.
