Both Cubists, the painters Albert Gleizes and Jean Metzinger collaborated and delivered with this study the first theoretical work dedicated to Cubism, a movement born in 1909 with Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, whose principles they intended to defend:

"To the savage amazed by trinkets, we would attribute rudimentary taste, but we would be a thousand times right to compare to the savage the so-called civilized man who would only appreciate, for example, Italian painting or Louis XV furniture."

Bernard Gheerbrant, publisher and bookseller, brother of the writer-explorer Alain Gheerbrant, collected painters of his time throughout his life.
