A very fine copy in a magnificent binding executed by Georges Mercier and entirely painted by Louis Jou. As a "complete book designer," the latter adorned it "with a composition in the style of his woodcuts, incidentally paying homage to manuscript books that William Morris would not have disowned" (Yves Peyré).

In a modern cloth slipcase. Full ivory vellum bradel binding entirely painted by Louis JOU. Smooth spine adorned with the same floral border on a gilded ground with the title in reserve. Each cover adorned with a wide floral border on a gilded ground containing the letters of the title in reserve and a large gouache and varnished watercolor in the center, depicting the Passion on the front cover and the Crucifixion on the back, doublures and endpapers of white Japan paper. Untrimmed. Covers and spine preserved. Binding signed G. MERCIER successor to his father, 1931.

Edition illustrated with thirty full-page compositions and numerous ornaments, initials, tailpieces, headpieces, and vignettes drawn, wood-engraved, and printed by Louis JOU.
The text was elegantly typeset in red and black with characters designed by the artist.
