UNIQUE COPY designed by Germaine de Coster, composed in collaboration with a calligrapher, of 111 handwritten pages in red ink on white Tschi and 43 woodcuts by Jules Chadel, enhanced with India ink by Germaine de Coster.Bound thereafter are several documents testifying to the long relationship between the master, Chadel, and his student, de Coster:– 4 signed original color drawings, 6 original engravings by Chadel, and a photographic portrait of the artist,– 3 letters, one of which includes an original India ink wash drawing, and one autograph note signed by Jules Chadel to Germaine de Coster, dated between December 31, 1934, and November 20, 1939,– 2 signed autograph letters to Germaine de Coster, one from Guillaume Lerolle, dated December 19, 1941, the second from G. Quénioux, dated November 10, 1946, and a typed letter on B.N.F. letterhead signed by Jean Vallery-Radot, dated April 17, 1943.Jules Chadel's death in December 1941 occurred before the publication of his illustrated edition of Les Fêtes galantes. In a slipcase and protective chemise. Full plum morocco binding. Gilt decoration of interlaced hearts in the center of a scattering of gilt dots. Smooth spine. Parma morocco doublures repeating the cover decoration, plum silk endpapers. All edges gilt. Binding signed Georges Cretté, after a design by Germaine de Coster. The text of the preface and poems was transcribed by hand.
