In a cardboard slipcase. Olive brown morocco binding. Ribbed spine with gilded date at the foot. On the front cover, an important polychrome composition in incised leather depicting a rural scene, a peasant leading his cow and sheep on a path leading to a distant village. Inner frame with a floral border with red inlaid flowers, silk lining and endpapers printed with floral motifs. Gilt edges on vellum. Original covers and spine preserved. Binding signed S. DAVID. Spine slightly faded.

Edition illustrated with sketches from nature drawn and engraved on wood and copper in the text by Auguste LEPÈRE, evoking both the physiognomy of the Norman province and the bourgeois and peasant customs of the late 19th century.
