William Tell (German: Wilhelm Tell) is Friedrich von Schiller's penultimate completed drama. Finished in 1804, the play premiered on March 17, 1804, at the Hoftheater in Weimar. In Schiller's paratext, the drama is simply noted as "spectacle" (play) and refers to the Swiss national myth of William Tell and the Rütli Oath, when in the 14th century, Switzerland fought against the Habsburg Empire for its independence. Rossini's four-act opera is based on a French adaptation of the play.
