Full gray cloth binding, title in red embossed on the front cover and spine. Laminated dust jacket illustrated in color with a work by MATISSE: The Open French Window (Volume 1) and Large Red Interior (Volume 2). Both volumes are housed in a full red cloth slipcase. VOLUME 1: This volume was produced under the direction of the author with the collaboration of Roger FARRY and Michel MUGUET, assisted by Serge ROMAIN. It was printed by BRAUN et CIE in Mulhouse-Dornach for the 158 black photogravure illustrations within and outside the text, and by Imprimerie DRAEGER Frères in Montrouge for the 76 color photogravure illustrations and those in offset, one of which is a frontispiece. The work also features numerous black and white photographs of Matisse. At the end, the tables of black and white illustrations, color illustrations, and the table of contents. VOLUME 2: This volume was produced under the direction of the author with the collaboration of ROGER FARRY, Michel MUGUET, and Serge ROMAIN. It was printed by BRAUN et Cie in Mulhouse-Dornach for 228 black photogravure illustrations within and outside the text, and by Imprimerie DRAEGER Frères in Montrouge for the 79 color photogravure illustrations and those in offset, one of which is a frontispiece, black and white photographs within and outside the text.
