Copy enhanced with an autograph dedication signed by the author on the half-title page: "To Dédé and Jean Marcenac / who are angels, / Paul Éluard."

Jean Marcenac (1913-1984) wrote his first poems in 1932 and then discovered surrealism. He met Lucien Bonnafé (future psychiatrist) in Toulouse during his studies. He married Andrée Labry ("Dédé") in 1936. After studying philosophy at the Sorbonne, during which he associated with the young Martinican surrealist poet Pierre Yoyotte, but also communist intellectuals such as Georges Politzer, Valentin Feldman, and Pierre Hervé, he joined the French Communist Party. Taken prisoner in 1940, he escaped from his POW camp the following year and actively engaged in the French Resistance. He was also close to Éluard and Aragon and translated the poetry of Pablo Neruda.
