Impressions of Africa
Reference: 56948
"The origin of the novel is a short text by Raymond Roussel titled "Among the Blacks". Impressions of Africa was first published, at the author's expense, in serialized form in the weekly newspaper Le Gaulois du dimanche from issue 82 of July 10-11, 1909, to issue 101 of November 20-21, 1909. This publication was accelerated starting in late October. The novel was then published in one volume, also at the author's expense, by Lemerre editions. This edition differs from the serialized version due to numerous corrections concerning punctuation, suppression of repetitions, and textual enrichments.
Summary: "The steamboat Lyncée is shipwrecked near the African coast. The castaways, including the narrator, are captured by the army of Emperor Talou VII. While awaiting their liberation, they prepare a series of acts for a show titled "The Gala of the Incomparables." The day after the show, they are released.
In the text, the account of the gala precedes the presentation of the characters, the shipwreck, the capture, and the explanations of the acts, which at first appear extraordinary. Moreover, Raymond Roussel indicated that the novel should be read starting from page 147, meaning the second part before the first."
