“I am a dog. My body isn’t very large, about three compressed chickens in a cube. Despite my small size, nothing escapes me: neither the pastis my master secretly pours himself nor that strange smell that permeates my mistress’s clothes. I see everything from below, in fragments, then I reassemble it. I observe with my nose, my ears, my memory, and especially my imagination. I’d like to think, to reason like the most foolish of men do, but often I get bogged down, I get my tenses wrong. Fortunately there’s Sonia who helps and protects me, Sonia Potemkine. She says: a dog is a window that opens onto the other world. She says: a dog is a punctuation mark between beings, a hyphen. I love listening to her speak. I lie down at her feet. A gentle warmth washes over me. I am a link, a tender pretext. A breath soothed by the caress of words.”
