Jean Vertex investigated the drug scene for three years: "Therefore, I also set aside investigation, reporting, and novels, in favor of an intermediate genre that I simply call a narrative, and which partakes, in terms of method, of the three preceding genres. I understand that this work was not conceived with the idea of erecting a literary monument, but with the intention of providing a simple testimony. I tell what I saw, and only what I saw. I wrote without passion, not to judge and condemn, but to recount and reveal: it is up to each reader to draw their own conclusions."
