Beautifully adapted by Luis Buñuel in 1977 under the title *That Obscure Object of Desire*, *La Femme et le Pantin* (The Woman and the Puppet) is a novel by Pierre Louÿs published in 1898.

This book burns with passion and perversity pushed to their paroxysm. During the Seville Carnival, the Frenchman André Stévenol falls under the spell of a young Andalusian woman, Concepción Perez. They exchange a quick, promising sign and immediately seek to see each other again. André confesses this situation to his friend Don Mateo, who startles and decides, in order to warn him, to recount his painful adventure with the young woman of whom he was the puppet.
