The cave

"The Cave" is a two-act play by Jean Anouilh, written in 1958 and first performed at the Théâtre Montparnasse-Gaston Baty (Paris) on October 5, 1961, directed by Roland Piétri and the author himself, with sets and costumes by Jean-Denis Malclès. It is part of the "Nouvelles pièces grinçantes" (New Caustic Plays) series, along with "L'Hurluberlu ou le Réactionnaire amoureux" (The Eccentric or the Reactionary in Love) (1957), "L'Orchestre" (The Orchestra) (1962), "Le Boulanger, la Boulangère et le Petit Mitron" (The Baker, the Baker's Wife, and the Little Baker's Assistant) (1968), and "Les Poissons rouges ou Mon père ce héros" (The Goldfish or My Father the Hero) (1968).

Summary: "This comedy evokes the atmosphere of 1910. 'The Cave' refers to the scullery and kitchen in a master's house, centers of bitterness, resentment, and the detestation of the inferior towards the superior, which can, incidentally, be a source of comedy." —Interview given to La Gazette de Lausanne, March 4, 1961, by Jean Anouilh.
