This beautiful edition is the fifth of La Peau de chagrin, published seven years after the original and featuring over four hundred variations compared to the previous edition (1835).First printing copy, with the skeleton title page, the gardener's vignette on page 301, and the various textual remarks noted by Carteret and Brivois.

Complete with the portraits on pages 149 and 287 on China paper laid down on vellum and the subscription prospectus.

Copy enhanced with a suite of 99 (out of 101) vignettes on thick paper (with title for the 1st and without those on pages 365 and 401).

In bordered slipcases. Full dark brown morocco binding. Boards adorned with a central rosette surrounded by a frame with decorated corners. Spine beautifully decorated in the same style. Pink moiré silk doublures bordered with gilt fillets and corner ornaments on the same morocco. Endpapers of the same silk. All edges gilt. Original wrappers and spine preserved. Very beautiful romantic pastiche binding made by G. MERCIER, successor to his father, 1926.
