The novel follows Catherine, a woman who has been married for twenty-five years to Francis, a charming man with multiple extramarital affairs. However, Catherine has always seen herself as her husband's confidante and soulmate, the "first wife," convinced that their union was solid and that these deviations were only temporary.

Her life takes a drastic turn when Francis announces his intention to leave her for a younger woman. Suddenly, Catherine loses her bearings, her status, and a large part of her past. She finds herself in the paradoxical position of being a "widow of a living man," forced to mourn her marriage and learn to live alone again.
