The Princess of Ys

"Jean du Perrier decided to place his story under the banner of the final confrontation between Christianity and Druidism, with the former triumphing, which is obviously not surprising. But the pleasant surprise comes from the consideration, even admiration, with which he defends the vanquished religion. Gwénolé is presented as an elite druid who chooses Christianity, and fundamentally, more than the story of the curse carried by the city and its princess Da-hut/A-hès (pronunciations and spellings change quite a bit over time, as is well known), we witness the formidable battle between the future saint and Madonax, the high priest of the old religion. The demise of A-hès and her city will not be demanded by the Christian God, but on the contrary, will appear as vengeance from the ancient deities, the terrible price to pay for conversion to Christianity, legitimately seen as a betrayal. It seems to me that this is a rather atypical interpretation of the legend on Jean du Perrier's part, although my knowledge of the field is not such that I can truly judge it (any opinions from the audience?).
