Albert SAMAIN illustrated by André des GACHONS

The Golden Chariot.

Paris Mercure de France 1915

Reference: 51368

UNIQUE COPY enhanced in the text with 79 LOVELY ORIGINAL WATERCOLORS BY ANDRÉ DES GACHONS (1871-1951). This artist is said to have produced between 1913 and 1951 nearly 77,000 sky watercolors, including 9,500 meteorological watercolors as a volunteer observer for the Central Bureau of Meteorology. A journalist from L'Illustration wrote in 1920: "Mr. André des Gachons, a talented painter, has made it his specialty to translate with real mastery the fleeting lights of dawns or sunsets. During his studies, he noticed certain relationships between the weather and sky nuances thatwould have escaped a less trained eye. He was thus led to codify his observations in the form of watercolors whose “reading” is as easy as it is attractive."

Below the justification, the artist painted a cornflower and inscribed the following: "Illustrated by André des Gachons / June-July / 1916".

A sentimental autograph inscription appears on the dedication poem and opposite a watercolor portrait of a woman.
