Dante's Counsel. 1321-1921

Charles Maurras, born on April 20, 1868, in Martigues and died on November 16, 1952, in Saint-Symphorien-lès-Tours, was a French journalist, essayist, politician, and poet, a member of the Académie française. A theorist of integral nationalism, he was one of the main leaders of Action française.

This "Conseil de Dante" dates from 1913 and was a preface to Louise Espinasse-Mongenet's translation of the Inferno. It was published separately in 1920, on the occasion of the sixth centenary of Dante's death. In 1944, when he included the "Conseil" in "Poésie et Vérité", Maurras no doubt found painful satisfaction in having thus predicted "a trial that everything prepares". No doubt he had also thought about it again in 1929 when Charles Benoist chose to quote, on the same theme, before the Institut d'Action française, another great Italian: Machiavelli.
