The Dice Cup

Paris Stock 1922

Reference: 42755

A precious press service copy, each leaf of which has been mounted on laid paper, in octavo format, including the cover. It is illustrated in all the margins and blank spaces of the text with 51 ORIGINAL WATERCOLORS painted directly onto the book by Giorgio LEONARDI, the first depicting the author in front of a dice cup.

BEAUTIFUL AUTOGRAPH INSCRIPTION BY MAX JACOB in pink ink on the verso of the half-title: "I fill this cup with a thousand flowers of rhetoric for Monsieur Dubuffet with affectionate respect," followed by an autograph inscription by Giorgio Leonardi, "al Signor Dubuffet." From a bourgeois family in Le Havre, Dubuffet arrived in Paris after his baccalaureate and was quickly introduced to Max Jacob and Roger Vitrac. It was only later that the artist published his theories on art brut. - Giorgio Leonardi is not listed in Bénézit.
