ORIGINAL EDITION.Le Devoir et l'Inquiétudeis the first book published by Paul Éluard under this pseudonym, written at the front, at the age of twenty-two. It was edited by his friend and mentor Aristide-Jules Gonon, who was an editor and art bookbinder in Montmartre. Ten poems from this collection, composed at the front, had previously appeared, cyclostyled in 17 copies for a few friends of the poet under the title Le Devoir. A wood engraving by André Deslignères printed on China paper adorns the frontispiece of the volume.
LIMITED EDITION OF ONLY 206 COPIES, ALL INITIALED BY THE PUBLISHER, this copy being one of the 200 on Arches laid paper (no. 170).
Precious copy offered by Paul Éluard to the poet and journalist Florian-Parmentier (1879-1951), with a signed autograph inscription dated October 23, 1919; then to the bookbinder Pierre-Lucien Martin, with this new inscription from his hand, written the yearof his death; and in 1952, to Pierre-Lucien
Martin, who shared the same love of books as our old friend A.-J. Gonon.
Bound with sober elegance by Pierre-Lucien Martin for his own collection, the copy is enhanced with a framed photographic portrait of Aristide-Jules Gonon, the verso of which bears this signed autograph inscription from the volume's publisher: "to Pierre Martin, this 'Figure' which is nevertheless unfamiliar to him." This dedication is dated September 1940, the period when Pierre-Lucien Martin, who had begun his career with Gonon as a bookbinder, established himself independently. It was also through him that he met Paul Éluard, with whom he became friends. The copy does not appear in the P.-L. Martin Library catalog (1987) because it had been carefully preserved by one of his daughters after the renowned bookbinder's death in 1985. Talvart [&] Place, V, 195, no. 1. Devauchelle, III, 270-272 – Fléty, 122-123 – Peyré, 224.
