Manech is young and strong, a bit of a smuggler, a bit of a pilotari. Manech loves his homeland, but to marry the woman he loves, he must leave. Manech embarks, becomes wealthy in Chile, returns home, and marries Kattalin. Le Mariage basque is a long short story, Jammes's tribute to this country he fell in love with, and whose strict customs and characters influenced even his style:"at eleven o'clock, this absolutely clear azure, this incisive blackness of the plane trees absolutely clear, the shirts, trousers and sandals of the players absolutely clear, and the pelota revealing its absolutely clear curve..."

How can one not present Ramiro Arrue (1892-1971), the child of Bilbao, a Basque painter among Basque painters, the painter of oxen and ox-drivers, of dancers and plows? This painter of such sure talent and refined palette whose fame now extends far beyond the borders of the seven provinces.

Modern antique rose full chagrin binding, leather hinges. Smooth spine, gilt title, blackened copper plate with Basque motif (elderly couple and country scene) engraved by G. BARRÉ mounted in the center of the upper cover. Gilt top edge. Original covers and spine preserved. Illustrated with eight color etchings engraved on two plates by André Lambert. From watercolors by Ramiro ARRUÉ.
