Squeezed between two novels of absolute darkness, The Dream, the sixteenth volume of Les Rougon-Macquart, is a pause in Zola's experimental and purely naturalist work. After the publication of the Manifesto of the Five, Zola desired "a book that would not be expected of me [...] that could be placed in everyone's hands, even the hands of young girls", an aesthetic compromise, an attempt "to redo Paul et Virginie in artistic writing and within a realistic framework".

Although the love between Angélique and Félicien ultimately triumphs, with both uniting in a lavish ceremony, Zola - who had long entertained the idea of giving this volume a happy ending - could not resist giving The Dream the tragic conclusion characteristic of Les Rougon-Macquart: Angélique would die with a kiss, the first she gave, the last she received.

In a bordered slipcase. Binding in chrome green Jansenist morocco. Ribbed spine, gilt date at the foot. Double gilt fillet on edges and turn-ins. Grey morocco doublures framed by a gilt fillet, endpapers of turquoise blue brocaded silk. All edges gilt. Covers and spine preserved. Complete with publisher's catalogue pages at the end. Binding signed Noulhac and dated 1913.
