The day after the Reichstag fire, on February 28, 1933, Bertolt Brecht left Germany with his wife Helene Weigel. Traveling through Prague and Vienna, he arrived in Switzerland. During the first months of his emigration, he traveled back and forth between Switzerland and Paris to meet Kurt Weill, with whom he completed the ballet The Seven Deadly Sins, which premiered in Paris in June of the same year. During his stays in Paris, Brecht met the German novelist Hermann Kesten, another emigrant, who had become a literary advisor for a publishing house in Amsterdam. It was then that the first negotiations for The Threepenny Novel took place. It goes without saying that Brecht drew inspiration from political and economic life and that the events of the novel often refer to the political situation in Germany under the Nazi regime. However, the story of a gangster king who marries the daughter of the director of a company called "The Beggar's Friend" covers a much wider scope.
