In 1917, Victor Segalen returned to China as a doctor attached to a mission recruiting Chinese laborers. It was during this last journey that he stayed in the Nanjing region and was able to gather new archaeological documents there. Near Wuxi, he studied a tumulus which, according to local monographs, was the tomb of a prince of the Kingdom of Wu (585-473 BC). It is the description of this tomb, written by Segalen in Shanghai in 1917, that we are pleased to publish here, as a final tribute to this noble spirit where the sensitivity of the poet, the taste of the artist, and the science of the archaeologist united in such beautiful harmony.
