FIRST EDITION of the foundational printed text of Surrealism. One of 150 numbered copies on Arches laid paper, third issue.

May and June 1919, the war was not yet spoken of in the past tense, but Breton and Soupault, still mobilized, distanced themselves from Dada, filled their papers with automatic writing like "a single two-headed author," and produced this pivotal book of the avant-garde, whose content, appealing or off-putting depending on the critic, leaves no one indifferent.

In slipcase and chemise. Full ebony morocco binding. Boards adorned with inlaid pieces of cyan, turquoise blue, grey-blue, and marbled box calf, sprinkled with small palladium squares and dots, silver lettering on the spine, grey paper doublures and endpapers, palladium edges on original rough edges. Wrappers and spine preserved. Binding signed Alain DEVAUCHELLE, dated 1985. A few discreet restorations to the wrapper. Frontispiece features reproductions of portraits of Breton and Soupault by Picabia.
