A debut novel, *Les épées* strikes by its constant provocation towards a France that, after the Liberation, awakens entirely resistant, voluntarily amnesiac of a recent inglorious past.

The hero, François Sanders, suffering from an acute form of mid-century malaise, reluctantly joins the militia after a failed attempt to join the resistance. From the height of his contempt, from which nothing escapes - except his sister Claude, whom he loves with an ambiguous love - François goes through the war without glory, aware that he is sinking into a detestable situation.

"I have always been isolated because I was not interested" he confesses.

Published in 1948, *Les Épées* spares no one and scathed a France overcome by "Résistantialisme." It also marks Roger Nimier's entry into literature - by the grand entrance! - an author who would soon be presented as the leader of the literary movement of the Hussards.
