First edition. "Here is an excellent little book, unpretentious, and which will be very useful. Nothing is more
dramatic, but, most often, nothing is more complicated and obscure than the Spanish wars under
Napoleon. M. Guillon's account of them in ten chapters is sober, clear and sufficiently detailed. If the author was unable
to use the recent works of Commander Balagny and Lieutenant-Colonel Clerc, he fortunately
made use of the monumental work of General Gómez de Arteche; above all, he drew great benefit from all the French
and English memoirs relating to the Spanish campaigns. I particularly appreciated his judgments on
the conduct and consequences of the war. "Ill-begun," said Napoleon; "ill-begun and ill-conducted,"
