This is one of 40 copies including a suite of the plates in black with remarks and AN ORIGINAL DRAWING from page 128 corresponding to Cécile Volanges' letter to Sophie Carnet: "I was undressing when mama came in... The first drawer she opened was precisely the one where Chevalier Danceny's letters were... I was so troubled..." Pencil drawing with watercolor highlights, on thin bistre-colored paper, signed top left, 20 × 16 cm, depicting young Cécile Volanges in her nightgown, receiving, at her bedside, her mother brandishing the forbidden love letter.

The refinement of Cretté's binding, expressing in this interplay of intertwined rings these "Dangerous Liaisons," marks the pinnacle achieved by this undisputed master of Art Deco binding.

In a bordered slipcase. Full brick-red morocco binding adorned with a scattering of gold, silver, and black rings intertwined like links and squares, like a game. Smooth spine with gilt title. Suede endpapers framed with morocco. All edges gilt. Original covers preserved. Binding signed G. CRETTÉ.

Superb illustrated edition with 50 color compositions by Sylvain SAUVAGE, engraved on copper with the collaboration of D.A. MAILLART and produced in Paul HAASEN's workshop. They are all large compositions, consisting of 2 frontispieces, 2 title vignettes, 5 chapter headings, 39 in-text illustrations, and 2 tailpieces.
