New translation, given by the Comte de La Bédoyère. First published anonymously in Leipzig in 1774, this scandalous masterpiece, heralding Romanticism, revealed the name of Goethe (1749-1832) to all of Europe.

Full lemon morocco binding, with gilt fillets and floral motifs framing the covers, richly decorated smooth spine, gilt inner dentelle, gilt edges. Binding signed BAUZONNET. Illustrated with 3 intaglio figures engraved on copper by Ghendt and Simonet after Jean-Michel Moreau (1741-1814), known as Moreau le Jeune, with a double state of the figures (before and with the letter), as for the copies on vellum. A portrait of a "weeping" Werther, engraved for the 1804 Demonville edition by C. Noël after a drawing by Louis Léopold Boilly (1761-1845), a painter made famous by his expressive heads, has been added opposite the title page at the time of binding.
