Included are an autograph letter signed by A. Gide to Richard Heyd, the publisher of the work, congratulating him on this edition: "I think of the joy Proust would have had"; and an autograph letter signed by Martin du Gard to Heyd re-evaluating Balzac after reading these letters from Proust to André Gide: "I am once again convinced that Balzac is not my man and I will not insist. I have just experienced this by re-reading in Illusions the meeting of Rubempré with the Spanish priest."

This publication relates to the publication ofSwann's Way. Gide apologizes for having refused the volume and proposes that the NRF publish the other volumes ofIn Search of Lost Time.
