AUTOGRAPHED, SIGNED SENDING from Zola to his close friend Numa COSTE (1843-1907).

A painter originally from Aix-en-Provence, like Zola (and Cézanne, with whom he was also close), he formed a literary society of Aixois expatriates with Zola and Paul Alexis in the 1860s, Le Bœuf nature, and then, still with these two companions joined by Marius Roux and Dujardin-Beaumetz, he created the journal in 1880 L'Art librefrom which the Salon des Indépendants was born, a true means of expression for the Impressionists. In 1881, he returned to settle permanently in Aix and divided his residence between a house in the city center and a country house in Célony which would serve as a model for Zola for Antoine Macquart's house in Les Tulettes. Numa Coste abandoned painting and became involved in activities as an archaeologist, art critic, and art historian. In 1885, he became a correspondent for the Sémaphore de Marseille and published numerous studies and art criticisms, mainly on the archaeology of the Aix region, in various media.
