Robert Adams had embarked on the Charles, a ship bound for the Cape Verde Islands, which was shipwrecked on October 11, 1810, on the coast of the Sahara. He was taken prisoner and enslaved by the Moors of that region, crossed the desert to Soudenny, then to Timbuktu, where he stayed for 4 months. Still captive, he then went to Taoudeni and crossed the Western Sahara, staying with the Ouled Delim for about ten months, then with the Ouled Bou Sba. He finally arrived in Goulimine, where he remained for over a year. He was ransomed in August 1813 and went to Mogador, crossing the small kingdom of Sidi Hachem in Tazeroualt. He stayed for 8 months in Mogador with the English vice-consul, Joseph Dupuis, who had intervened to free him. After meeting the Moroccan Sultan in Meknes, he went to Tangier, then to Cadiz, where he stayed for another 14 months, and finally reached England in July 1815.
