Abstract: "I know no one who did not love the literature of Monsieur de Musset; as for me, I say it, it pleases me immensely": it was in these terms that Balzac hailed the publication of the Nouvelles. Published in the Revue des Deux Mondes between 1837 and 1839, they recount love stories that are in turn light and serious, funny and melancholic. Dandies and grisettes, mischief, stolen kisses, clandestine meetings, heartbreaking goodbyes: one can guess all the fantasy of the author's relationships in these tales featuring a man in love with two women (Les Deux Maîtresses), an artist lover (Le Fils du Titien), or a penniless boy determined to gather one hundred thousand écus to marry the one he loves (Croisilles)... Borrowing simultaneously from the classic analytical novel, the bawdy tale, and the fairy tale, Musset achieves here the high mastery of his art as a prose writer."
