Jean-Baptiste GRESSET (1709-1777) was a French poet and playwright. The DAVID binding with the green parrot on the covers refers to Gresset's most famous poem,Vert-Vertwhich tells the story of a parrot taken in at the convent of Nevers where the Visitandine sisters teach him Christian language. Demanded by nuns from Nantes, he is entrusted to a Loire boatman. Naturally, on the boat he learns the vocabulary of sailors and loose women. Upon arrival, the parrot swears like a sailor. The terrified nuns from Nantes send him back to Nevers where they have great difficulty teaching him Latin again.

Period binding, full red morocco, decorated with rich gilt rocaille borders on each cover, a small green parrot in the center of each cover surrounded by a large gilt rocaille lozenge. Spine with raised bands, richly decorated with the date at the foot. Gilt fillets on board edges and caps. Gilt tops. Wide gilt inner dentelle. Binding signed DAVID. Minor and tiny rubbing on the joints. Perfect interior with a portrait of the author as frontispiece to volume 1 and 8 plates out of text; all in 2 states, one of which is "avant la lettre" by Moreau Le Jeune.
