It was to rally the most powerful houses of the kingdom around him and to win over the main leaders of the Catholic party, in the midst of the Wars of Religion, that Henry III created a new order of chivalry in December 1578. Dedicated to the Holy Spirit, in memory of his accession to the thrones of Poland (in 1573) and then France (in 1574) on a Pentecost day, the Order became the most illustrious of the French monarchy. It comprised one hundred members who had to prove three degrees of nobility. It shone in all its glory under Louis XIV.

Period binding in full burgundy morocco. Spine with raised bands adorned with a semy of fleurs-de-lis and gilt flames, and a green morocco title-piece. Covers richly adorned with the royal arms of Louis XIV at the center, surrounded by the orders of Saint Michael and the Holy Spirit, beautiful gilt corner-pieces depicting the dove of the Holy Spirit on a radiant background within a baroque floral frame. Gilt dentelle border, inner roll-tooling, and on the edges. All edges gilt. Printed on large paper, this edition is adorned with an engraved title, 3 vignettes, 3 decorated initials, and 8 tail-pieces by Sébastien Le Clerc.
