Very beautiful illustrated edition with 1 portrait of Lamennais and approximately 90 compositions by Carlos SCHWABE, including 45 original etchings, of which 42 large headpieces on half-page, each accompanied by an ornate initial, and 42 tailpieces. Text within a thorn border.

LIMITED EDITION of 166 numbered copies, this one bearing No. 3 printed for M. Pierre Meunier.

UNIQUE COPY printed on Holland paper containing:

- A double separate suite of the etchings, on China paper (without the ornate initial for the headpieces) and on white vellum

- The printing on vellum paper of 42 floral borders drawn by Carlos Schwabe and not used by the publisher; on the verso of these borders is the series of tailpieces in a separate printing.

This copy is, moreover, enriched with the AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT, signed, of an important article by Lamennais, very sharply refuting the allegations contained in an article in theMoniteurand whose official inspiration is now manifest; this article seems to have been published by Lamennais in his newspaperL'Avenir, which, founded on September 1st, 1830, was suspended on November 15, 1831. In this article, Lamennais calls for the emancipation of the Catholic religion from all administrative tutelage, the free exercise of worship both inside and outside churches, and the application of the charter of 1830. This article comprises 6 quarto pages.

In a bordered slipcase and a chemise with a garnet morocco spine and edges. Garnet morocco binding. Spine with 4 double raised bands with a gilded and mosaic fleuron. The beveled boards are adorned with two large compositions in incised and dyed leather, the upper board's composition depicting a cross around which a serpent is coiled, with the Holy Spirit above, in a thistle ornamentation on a stippled background. Dark red morocco lining with a large decoration featuring a frame of gilded fillets and a scattering of Latin crosses, in green calf, cold-stamped onto gilded wire glories, alternating with trefoil crosses in brown morocco with cold-stamped settings, borders of cold-stamped arabesques and platinum Latin crosses. Garnet moiré endpapers. All edges gilded. Original covers and spine preserved. Binding signed Charles MEUNIER.
