As a young man, and despite Verlaine's insistence, Nouveau hesitated to embrace faith, he who worshipped only Beauty: “How can one not love beliefs that have produced so much art?”he wondered. The hesitation passed and his adherence was total. Nouveau became “that good painter and good Christian and good poet too”as his friend Verlaine described him.
