Superb illustrated edition of probably Pierre Loti's most famous novel, mainly written in Bakhar-Etchea and completed while a sailor from the Javelot, whom he had taken in, was dying in the next room. In a Basque Country slightly tinged with folklore, young Ramuntcho struggles between ambition and attachment to this homeland whose every path his espadrilles have trodden.

A student of his father, Achille Zo, before moving to Paris and becoming a student of Léon Bonnat, also from Bayonne, Henri-Achille Zo became, over the years, a painter recognized for his talent, a noble representative of the Bayonne school of painting alongside Eugène Pascau or Hubert-Denis Etcheverry. In addition to this Ramuntcho for which he provided superb illustrations, he is credited with illustrating Raymond Roussel's famous Nouvelles Impressions d'Afrique published in 1932.
