Illustrated edition with 23 compositions, 21 of which are hand-colored with stencils, most of them full-page and double-page by Garcia BENITO. This Spanish Art Deco master (1891-1981) began his career as an illustrator in Paris with Tolmer and in Lucien Vogel's Bon Ton team, then with Condé-Nast, for whom he created numerous covers for Vogue, and finally, in the United States, for Harper's Bazaar. Édouard-Garcia Benito's talent as an image-maker is fully expressed in illustrating this wonderful tale of a soldier from the Great War, wounded and reborn to life thanks to the complicit gaze of the Cathedral's angel, who takes on the features of his nurse.

This story is an opportunity to showcase Reims in beautiful stencil plates.The compositions alternate scenes of warlike epics, the baptism of Clovis, cathedral builders, Joan of Arc accompanying her King Charles VII for his coronation, Henri IV, Napoleon and his grand army, and a final tableau, radiating in its Art Deco composition, the cathedral amidst its vineyards in a scene of Champagne grape harvesting.
